Aromasin (Exemestane) Description

Exemestane, sold under brands such as Aromasin, it is a drug used to treat breast cancer. Aromasin (Exemestane) is a member of the anti-estrogen class called aromatase inhibitors. Some breast cancers require estrogen to grow. These cancers have estrogen receptor (ER), which is called ER positive. They may also be called estrogen responsive, hormone responsive, or hormone receptor positive. Aromasin (Exemestane) is an enzyme that synthesizes estrogen. Aromasin (Exemestane) inhibitors block the synthesis of estrogen. This lowers estrogen levels and slows the growth of cancer.

Aromasin (Exemestane) is used in the adjuvant treatment of postmenopausal women with estrogen receptor-positive early breast cancer. They have been treated with tamoxifen for two to three years and switched to adjuvant hormone therapy for a total of five consecutive years. The US FDA approved it in October 2005.

Aromasin (Exemestane) is also suitable for the treatment of advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women whose disease has progressed after receiving tamoxifen treatment.
